What is average view duration?
Average view duration is the average number of minutes viewers watched a video. YouTube's help defines it as the average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch, calculated from engaged views and the watch time that goes with them. A view that ends almost as soon as it starts does not drag the figure down the way it would in a plain division of total minutes by total clicks.
How YouTube calculates it
The idea is a division: the watch time of the engaged views, divided by the number of engaged views. A hypothetical example: 600 engaged views that add up to 2,400 minutes watched give an average view duration of 4 minutes. The figure follows the filters you pick in Studio, such as the date range or a country, so the same video can show different numbers in different reports.
Average view duration vs watch time
| Metric | What it measures | Grows when |
|---|---|---|
| Watch time | Total minutes watched across all views | More people watch, or they watch longer |
| Average view duration | Minutes watched per engaged view | Each view lasts longer |
A video can gain watch time while its average view duration falls: more viewers arrive, and each one leaves sooner.
Where you see it
In YouTube Studio, open a video's Analytics. Average view duration appears on the Engagement tab and in the key metrics of the Content tab, next to views.
Why average view duration matters
It is the other half of the thumbnail's grade. The click-through rate says how often the thumbnail was chosen; average view duration says whether the people who chose it got what they came for. YouTube's own help on click-through rate points at the combination to avoid: a high click-through rate with a low average view duration is how a thumbnail that oversells shows up in the numbers, and those videos are recommended less afterwards.
So the useful thumbnail is not the most clickable one, it is the most clickable one the video can honour. A bold face, a big number and a strong claim all work, as long as the first minutes of the video deliver them. When a thumbnail test runs, read the winner's average view duration too: a version that wins the click and loses the viewer is not the one to keep.
Questions about Average View Duration
What is a good average view duration on YouTube?
YouTube gives no single target, because the number depends on the video's length. Compare a video with your own videos of a similar length, and read it next to the click-through rate rather than on its own.
Does the thumbnail affect average view duration?
Yes, through the promise it makes. A thumbnail that shows what the video delivers brings viewers who stay; one that oversells brings clicks that leave early, which lowers the average.
Is average view duration the same as watch time?
No. Watch time is the total minutes watched across all views. Average view duration divides that time by the views, so it tells you how long a typical view lasts.
