Which fonts work on a YouTube thumbnail?
Heavy, wide strokes and tight letters. A thumbnail is mostly seen around 168 pixels wide in the feed, the size of the preview next to the canvas, and at that size thin or script lettering turns into a smudge. The editor ships 14 faces, grouped by the job they do:
- Condensed headline faces: Anton, Bebas Neue, Oswald Bold and Fjalla One. Tall letters that fit three or four words across the frame. The default choice for most thumbnails.
- Heavy sans: Impact, Archivo Black, Arial Black, Montserrat Black and Poppins ExtraBold. Wider and blunter, for one or two words that have to read from across a room.
- Playful display: Titan One, Bangers and Luckiest Guy. Rounded or comic-book lettering for gaming, kids and challenge videos.
- Hand-drawn: Permanent Marker, for a scribbled note or an arrow label. Use it for one short line, not the headline.
- Plain: Verdana Bold, for small supporting text that needs to stay neutral.
Whichever you pick, add an outline: it is what keeps white text readable over a bright background, and every line in the editor has its own.

How do I put text on a YouTube thumbnail?

What is the best font for a YouTube thumbnail?

Yes. The format switch above the canvas moves between landscape (1280x720) and Shorts (720x1280), and your text keeps its proportion of the frame when you switch, so you don't have to resize everything again.
Can I add more than one line of text?
Up to three, and each one is independent — its own font, size, colour, outline and position. Most thumbnails carry two: the line that stops the scroll, and a smaller one qualifying it. Click a line on the image to select it, drag to move it, or nudge it with the arrow keys.
What is the hatched corner on the preview?
That is where YouTube stamps the video duration on landscape thumbnails — the bottom-right 15% by width and height. Anything you put under it is covered in the feed. It is a guide only and is never part of the downloaded PNG. Shorts carry no duration badge, so the guide disappears in that format.
How are the headline suggestions generated?
An AI model reads the video topic you provide (auto-filled from the video title if you paste a YouTube URL) and suggests a few short, attention-grabbing text options — you can use one as-is or edit it freely.
