Thumbnail Safe Zone

A thumbnail's safe zone is everything outside the bottom-right corner, where YouTube draws the duration badge on every video thumbnail.

What is a thumbnail safe zone?

A YouTube thumbnail's safe zone is the part of the 16:9 frame the duration badge never covers: everything except the bottom-right corner, where YouTube stamps the video's length in white on a small dark rectangle. Whatever sits under it is hidden on every surface the thumbnail appears on.

YouTube does not publish safe-zone dimensions for thumbnails. It publishes the size, the shape and the file limits. The safe zone comes from what YouTube adds on top of the image once it is live.

What YouTube draws over a thumbnail

None of these is documented as a spec; they are what YouTube's interface shows, as of October 2026.

  • The duration badge, bottom-right, on every video thumbnail. This is the one that matters most, because it is always there.
  • A red progress bar along the bottom edge, for viewers who have already watched part of the video.
  • Hover controls on a computer, which appear when a pointer rests on the thumbnail.

Around the image, the title and the channel row sit just below or beside it, depending on the layout. They do not cover the thumbnail, but they compete with it, so text on the image that repeats the title is wasted space.

Where you see it

Upload a thumbnail and look at the video in your own home feed or in search: the badge is drawn over the corner the moment the video is live. Before upload, the only way to see it is to put the image in a mock feed with the badge in place.

Why the safe zone matters

The bottom-right corner is not yours to design. The badge sits there regardless of what is underneath, so a face, a word or the product the video is about placed in that corner is half hidden on every impression. Planning around it by default costs nothing. Finding out after upload costs the thumbnail's first days.

The rest of the frame is yours. Keep one subject large and central or left, keep the corner quiet, and check the result at feed size with the badge drawn in.

Questions about Thumbnail Safe Zone

Does YouTube publish thumbnail safe-zone dimensions?

No. YouTube publishes the size, shape and file limits for thumbnails, not a safe zone. The safe zone is what creators work out from what YouTube draws on top of the image, and the duration badge in the bottom-right corner is the one overlay every thumbnail gets.

What goes in the bottom-right corner, then?

Background. Keep faces, text and the object the video is about out of it, and let that corner be a quiet part of the scene. Anything important placed there will sit under the badge on every surface.

Is the thumbnail safe zone the same as the Shorts safe zone?

No. The Shorts safe zone usually means the part of the vertical video not covered by the Shorts player's buttons and captions. A thumbnail safe zone is about the still image shown in feeds and suggestions.
