Each of these came out of the generator in the Sports Action style. Under each one, what makes it read in a feed full of other highlights.

AI-generated thumbnail: a curly-haired player in an orange jersey dunks under arena floodlights, with the words GAME WINNER

Basketball

The dunk

The rim and the raised arm run off the top of the frame, so the player looks bigger than the picture. He sits on the right, the two words fill the dark left half, and nothing competes with either. Orange jersey, dark crowd: the brightest thing in frame is the one you should look at.
AI-generated thumbnail: a player in a red jersey rises for a jump shot at the buzzer in a dark arena, words BUZZER BEATER

Basketball

The shot at the buzzer

The ball is at the top of the shot, a split second from leaving his hands. Frozen there, the picture asks whether it went in, and only the video answers. The words name the moment instead of the score, and there is no scoreboard to read: at 336 px it would be a grey smudge anyway.
AI-generated thumbnail: a streetball player in a white tank yells mid-crossover on a court at sunset, words ANKLES BROKEN

Streetball

The crossover

No defender in frame, and none needed: the words say what happened to him. The ball sits low and sharp, the fence and the city lights melt into the sunset, and ANKLES BROKEN is the phrase streetball viewers already use for this exact move.
AI-generated thumbnail: a sprinter in a blue singlet screams as she breaks the finish tape at golden hour, words 0.01 SECONDS

Athletics

The finish line

A number beats a superlative. 0.01 SECONDS says how close it was; INCREDIBLE FINISH would only say that someone thought so. The scream carries the effort, the low sun separates her from the stand, and the words sit mid-right, well above the duration badge.

How it works

You bring the sports video. We make the thumbnail.

Here is one real thumbnail from this page, followed from the brief to the download.

  1. Your input

Paste the video's link, or describe it

The brief is written from the link for you, or you write the scene yourself. This one was one sentence: “A footballer in a plain white kit with no badge strikes the ball mid-volley in heavy rain under stadium floodlights, water spraying off the boot, the ball sharp in the foreground, a blurred crowd behind”

  2. Words and style

The exact words, and a style

The words IMPOSSIBLE GOAL, typed exactly as they should read. The Sports Action style sets the framing, the light and the colours.

  3. Generated, then checked

Checked at the size of the feed

Every image is graded at 336 px, the width of a card in YouTube's feed. The words are read back and redrawn if a letter is wrong, and the bottom-right corner stays clear of the duration badge.

  4. Your thumbnail

Download it, or change it in a sentence

1280 × 720, or 4K. If it is close, describe the change ("make the title yellow") and the rest of the image stays as it is.

What each kind of sports video needs

Basketball and NBA highlights

One play, frozen at its top: the hand on the rim, the ball leaving the fingers, the block at its highest point. A broadcast frame shows ten small players; a thumbnail has room for one. For a video about a real player, the thumbnail shows a generic athlete in the same play and the title carries the name.

A player in a plain purple jersey hangs on the rim after a dunk, the defender on the floor below. Words: POSTER DUNK

NBA 2K and basketball games

A 2K park, MyCareer or Rec video sells the same thing a real highlight does: the shot, the build's best moment, the game-winner. Sports Action draws it as a real-looking court and a generic player, not the game's own render. When your reaction is the hook, the facecam styles on the gaming page fit better.

A player in a plain black jersey pulls up from deep in a packed outdoor park at night. Words: 99 OVERALL

Soccer and football

The viewer has usually seen the goal already, from the broadcast's one angle. Give them the angle they haven't seen: the boot on the ball, the ball sharp, the keeper or the crowd a blur behind. Rain and floodlights do half the drama for free.

A goalkeeper at full stretch tips a shot over the bar on a wet night under floodlights. Words: HOW?

Football clickbait thumbnails

Reddit collects these as a joke genre: red arrows, crying players, scores that never happened. They're funny because the video never delivers. On your own channel, exaggerate something the video actually shows, or the click turns into a viewer who leaves in the first seconds.

A keeper on his knees in the rain, the ball in the net behind him. Words: HE DID WHAT

American football and NFL

The catch or the hit, never the formation. A receiver at full stretch with the ball at his fingertips reads at any size; eleven players lined up don't. Plain jerseys with no numbers keep it generic.

A receiver in a plain green jersey makes a one-handed catch in the end zone under floodlights. Words: ONE HAND

Athletics, fights and training

Anything with a finish line, a final round or a last rep. Put a number on it if the video has one: a time, a weight, a round. A face at full effort says more than any adjective.

A boxer in plain red gloves lands an uppercut, sweat spraying off his opponent. Words: ROUND 1

What the Sports Action style draws

Four rules, built into the style. What it leaves out matters as much: no real athlete, no team, league or sponsor logo, no real kit or player number, no scoreboard.

One athlete, cut by the frame

The edge of the frame crops an arm, a foot or the rim, so the player reads bigger than the picture. A second player only when he is the story, like the keeper beaten by the shot.

The ball is the sharpest thing in it

The eye goes where the detail is. Everything else gets motion blur or depth of field; the ball, the boot or the hand on the rim stays crisp.

A dark crowd and one bold colour

Floodlights from above or a low golden-hour sun, the stand blurred dark, and one bright kit colour on the athlete. At feed size the bright shape against the dark is what reads first.

Words where the athlete isn't

Two to four words on the empty side of the frame, typed exactly as they should read, never in the bottom-right corner where YouTube prints the duration.

Mistakes that cost sports thumbnails the click

Most of them only show at feed size. The free YouTube thumbnail tester puts yours next to real videos before you upload it.

A screenshot of the broadcast

A TV frame comes with a score bug, a channel logo and twenty small players. Shrunk to a card in the feed, none of them can be told apart.

The final score as the hook

3-2 answers the question the thumbnail should ask. If the score is the surprise, put it in the title and let the picture show the play that made it.

A celebration without the play

Every scorer celebrates roughly the same way. A screaming face reads as generic unless the frame also shows what happened: the ball, the net, the finish tape.

A club badge in the corner

Badges and league logos are trademarks, and at 336 px they shrink to a coloured dot. The generator leaves them out; a kit colour says which side you mean.
